I’m sitting on the roof terrace of a cafe in Istanbul’s tourist district – Sultanahmet. The Marmaris, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapi palace are all in view.   Beyond these is the Asian side.

I’m reminded of ’66 in Istanbul when we’d park the VW overnight(s) on the back lot of a (closed) garage a mile or so out of town and do the tourist business from there. I remember the Santa Sophia mosque(?)-how the space inside seemed to float : the floating fish restaurants by the quayside : the men in the souk getting up into the loft above their stall to hand down plates, some of which are on the walls here.
